FoodShare and CBC's Live Right Now

Over here at FoodShare, our Field to Table Schools team is busy buzzing like bees, getting their hands dirty in the garden, building innovative planters and cooking up a local food storm. Our Food Literacy workshops book up fast, but don't worry, we're finding new and exciting ways to make sure you and your students can still be involved in our Recipe for Change initiative to ensure that all students graduate with Food Literacy.

As part of our food education celebrations, we invite you to commit to FoodShare's Food Literacy challenges as part of CBC's newest campaign, Live Right Now. You can find an amazing range of different challenges for you and your students to try by visiting CBC's Live RightNow.ca. FoodShare team is delighted to be showcasing a small sampling of our great hands-on Food Literacy activities as part of this campaign.

Click these links for all the resources, to find out more and to start pledging your participation:

Dig It: We challenge you to get to know your soil! Take the time to really explore this vital resource, learn why you should protect it and even make your own!

Grow to Your Room: Are you interested in growing your own food but don't have the outdoor space? No worries, you can grow your own food and recycle at the same time in the comfort of your own room! Find out how you can turn a pop bottle into a personal planter.

Hold a Signature Salad Contest: Healthy Chefs, are you ready?! Challenge your friends and family to a signature salad-making contest, putting nutrition and culinary skills to the test!

The Great Big Crunch: Organize a synchronized apple crunch. No matter how you crunch, you'll be participating in a Canada-wide initiative, promoting the nutritious and delicious benefits of apples. For those of you that already participated in the 2011 Great Big Crunch, you can either crunch again, or just sign up to show the nation your efforts!

Play Plant Part Twister: Learn how many different parts of plants we eat with this fun game of Plant Part Twister.

Sing the Plant Part Song: Learn this fun song to teach students about how the healthy plants we eat reproduce.

Be an Apple Tree: Use this game to mime growing from a teeny, tiny little seed, all the way to a fully-grown apple tree with fruit.

Try this Relay Race: Try this relay race to not only get active, but also think about the differences between local and imported food sources.

* All participants can post messages, questions or triumphs in the blog attached to each challenge - you could be responsible for creating a national Food Literacy network with like-minded educators!

AND YOU CAN WIN!

The top school in each province or territory to sign up the most students and complete the most Live Right Now challenges will get bragging rights, prize packs to share with its most inspiring students and be featured on the site - and maybe even on CBC radio or television!

How do you get involved? It's simple:

1. Sign Up
Anyone can participate in Live Right Now by creating a profile on the site.
